I really enjoyed reading Drift to Shift. I was pulled in right away by its approachable language, and appreciated how each point was illustrated by larger stories, or even a simple metaphor. There was never a time the author left you to interpret her words alone; there were always supporting examples.

In fact, the book is structured around such individual stories to illuminate her points. She also poses several questions directly to the reader, engaging you along the way and into your own “drift to shift” journey. And, for skimmers, she recaps with key takeaways at the end of each chapter.

I’ve read many books of this kind and I still found myself inspired, and even came across a few phrases I’ve never heard before, such as, “no one is as dumb as you want them to be,” and, “we teach best what we most need to learn.” I appreciated how the author really walks her talk, sharing her own story of her time spent in the Amazon. Not only did this give her credibility but it showed that all of us are capable of changes large and small.

There are some points where this book gets a bit religious, but it’s not proselytizing and shouldn’t deter any non-believers - it was simply that for those people their “drift to shift” journeys stemmed around religion. The author talks about how shifts can happen anywhere - from career to relationships and within ourselves; sometimes these are intertwined and sometimes they aren’t, but when we’re honest with ourselves we can begin to live our life’s passion and truly find our purpose. For those who want to take the book’s learnings a step further, the author lists a helpful appendix with articles for additional reading and blog posts she’s written on this theme.

This is an excellent book for people contemplating a life change or who are just unhappy in some way, but may not quite understand yet why. I suggest readers really take their time reading this and think about answering the questions she poses, not just rushing through. View this almost as a workbook than as a read you need to barrel through. I actually found many similarities to The Artist’s Way. I promise you, if you take your time, reading this book will be an incredibly rewarding experience. I read it at a good time in my own journey, and for that reason, I give this book 3 out of 4 stars.
