In this book, Barbara introduces the reader to the less talked-about side of the healthcare sector—the business side. Born and raised the daughter of a physician, the author was a music instructor before deciding to become a physician assistant due to her love for taking care of people. This memoir discusses the healthcare system before and after the technological advancements. There have been a lot of innovations over the years, thanks to better government policies and technological advancements. The author discussed health insurance plans, their benefits, and what anyone interested in choosing a plan should look out for.

The book delves further to tell us about HMOs and exclusive provider organizations and teaches the average reader about the healthcare system and what they need to know to stay healthy. This book is rich because Barbara wrote it having been on the two sides of the fence—once a patient caregiver and now a cancer patient.

Even though Barbara was diagnosed with amelanotic nodular melanom, a form of skin cancer that arises during the mutation of melanocytes, at the tail end of writing this book, she did not allow the sickness to stop her from writing this masterpiece. When they say good things don’t last, could the scenario here be a perfect example in the sense that the sickness nearly prevented the completion of this book?

This book is unique because the author took the bull by the horns and led us on a discussion about the business side of the healthcare sector that is rarely talked about. I couldn’t find any drawbacks while reading because the editors did an exceptional editing job and the book did not have much high-sounding medical jargon that made comprehension difficult.

I advocate for Barbara Galutia’s “Surviving the Business of Healthcare” to be a rewarding read for health workers, policymakers, and anyone with a chronic illness. This book by Barbara Galutia Regis PA-C will get a rating of five out of five stars from me.
