Who Told You That You Were Naked?
A Reexamination of the Garden of Eden
Written by: William E. Combs
It starts with a memory of a young boy living in Alaska, walking in the darkest of nights, and coming face to face with a great light. In the author's words, "light is more than illumination from a flashlight." Inspired by this great light, the author takes us on another walk with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, during a time when they once walked with God.
Filled with visual imagery, from standing by a riverbank with Adam to observing the animals of creation through his eyes, we take part in what life must have been like before sin and death entered the world. The author gives us a taste of this ancient paradise before Eve's lips touch the forbidden fruit of the tree of Knowledge. From there we enter a world that is more familiar, the one in which we live to this day.
We are taken on a journey with not just Adam and Eve, but many persons from the Bible. These include some who may have encountered Jesus during his ministry on Earth, seeking to be healed of their infirmities. The past is brought to the present with personal testimonies about miracles that have occured even to this day. In this fallen world filled with suffering, the author directs us to the one true light in the darkness, the light and life of Jesus Christ.
A Reexamination of the Garden of Eden gives a refreshing perspective on the story of Adam and Eve. I believe something new can be discovered from these scripture stories no matter how many times they are read. The author is also able to give such vivid descriptions of the Garden, which awakens all the senses; you can truly feel as if you are there.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I appreciated the personal testimonies mentioned in this book. It brings these scripture stories to life by relating the struggles many endure today with the events that took place in the Bible. However, I did not give a perfect rating because some areas of the author's story are confusing. Towards the end of the book, I honestly thought I was reading a previous chapter twice. It was repeated almost word for word with a only a few pieces of new information. Also, I would suggest less and perhaps more to the point Study Questions at the end of the chapters. I speak from experience that it is easier to discuss 3-5 questions, especially in a group study session, rather than 5 or more.
I believe this book will appeal to Christian readers and those who are seeking a way to grow in their Faith. This book may be confusing or even overwhelming to those who are unfamiliar with the Bible or are not of the Christian Faith.
