Imagine living your life on the edge and narrowly missing death each time. Imagine having your parachute malfunction and still surviving, whereas many other people have died. If that's not enough, catching a disease in Nigeria, nearly dying, and then suffering from hernia may seem like the very end for many, but not for author Robert R. Abbott. From the early twenties, the author suffered a list of dangerous events that would have normally killed a person, but time and time again Robert eluded death and survived from the most painful and gruesome situations, be it falling from a malfunctioning parachute, almost dying from malaria, and even suffering with hernia, where the author had to undergo surgery that left Robert in agony. An experience that will last a lifetime and to anyone else definitely leave them with PTSD. But Robert pulled through it all, even suffering from heartbreak along the way.

The book begins with Robert being held at gunpoint and reminiscing of the past and his narrow death experiences. The author also gives a hint as to what we can expect while reading the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book from beginning to end. I often found myself traveling with the author, experiencing the thrilling yet terrifying situations that Robert found himself in, be it witnessing an explosion in Ibadan and hearing the horrifying annihilation of the Igbo soldiers and the raping of their women to lying on deaths suffering with malaria.

Although there was nothing to dislike about the book, I did encounter a few errors while reading, but nothing too drastic that would have hindered my need to read more of the book, hence I therefore rate it a 4 out 5.

The book contains profanity and acts of war. There are sensitive scenes that are vividly detailed and are not suitable for readers who are faint of heart. Appetite for Risk is a book I strongly recommend to older, mature readers who enjoy living life on the edge and are not afraid of sensitive topics as mentioned in the book.
