Review of Mindful Magic: Dreamy Bedtime Meditations for Children
This is an overall excellent book for parents to learn an array of techniques and practices to benefit their children's bedtime routine, but some could also be applied for any stressful situation. Honestly, many of these techniques would benefit the parent (or any adult) just as much if incorporated into daily life.
I’m going to start with what I personally did not like about the book, but what I liked vastly outweighs what I didn’t. I found the writing in the first part of the book to be extremely repetitive. Annoyingly so. I’m one of those people that usually appreciates repetition because I need all the help I can get to retain information, however in my opinion there were too many sentences rewritten to say the exact same thing over and over (and over) again.
The cover states the book would mostly benefit children between the ages of four to ten years old. While I think the techniques would be extremely beneficial to a person of any age, the verbiage in the meditations themselves seem much more advanced than for the average four or five year old. I have my doubts that this will hold their attention as much as than if it were written a little more age appropriately for the younger ones.
That said, this book offers so much helpful information for a parent and I would absolutely recommend it. From different breathing techniques to the many ways the amount of sleep affects a child to instructions on making their very own dream catcher, this book explains so much. We begin with what happens inside a child's brain during sleep, as well how sleep affects both the physical and mental growth and development. Is your child unusually angry or emotional? This book explains what the impacts of not getting an appropriate amount of restful sleep can actually have on a child. We learn the importance of atmosphere and ways to make children feel safe and comfortable in their space, routines, mindfulness, the helpfulness of imagery, parent / child bonding and so much more. My personal favorites are the many different breathing techniques and offering instruction to help children express their emotions effectively.
The author provides techniques to “equip our children with essential tools to navigate the challenges of life, promote emotional regulation, and cultivate a sense of inner peace”, which will last a lifetime!
