Who Told You That You Were Naked? A Refreshing Reexamination of the Garden of Eden is a non-fiction book with 10 chapters written by retired Presbyterian minister William E Combs. This is definitely a great read if you want to learn why there is sin in this world and how we, as Christians, can be delivered from sin through Jesus Christ.
Combs does a great job of using verses from the English Standard Version (ESV) Bible and gives an explanation of what these verses mean. He uses stories directly from the Bible and also adds some made up scenes, or what he describes as "vignettes," in order to help us identify and understand what may have happened during that time. He also adds personal testimonies throughout the book that relate to the topic at hand.
He takes us on a journey back to the time of Adam and Eve at the Garden of Eden. God gave Adam authority over all the animals of the earth but even with all of the creatures he still felt lonely. Then God created a woman from Adam's rib and he was no longer alone. God created a world that was filled with peace and joy but when Eve was tempted by the devil to consume the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil and presented it also to her husband they began to feel shame and embarrassment of their nakedness, which they had no knowledge of before. This is when sin entered the world. Sin is what has separated us from God. Later, Combs discusses how Jesus Christ came into the world to set us free from that sin.
I like that he reminds us that we are all sinners, even though some believe they are not. Being a good person is not what will save us from death but only by giving our hearts and minds to Jesus Christ, who came to this world and died for our transgressions. Many believers and churches fail to recognize this and I'm so glad Rev. Combs speaks of the importance of being born again.
I give this book 4 out of 4 starts because it is very engaging and informative; I didn't want to put it down. This book is very well written and edited with no grammatical errors or mistakes. As a Christian who already understands sin this book helped to give me a different perspective and understanding of God's purpose for us in ways I had never thought of before. This has now become one of my favorite inspirational books.
Each chapter ends with a series of thought provoking questions, which would be great for Bible studies and small group discussions. I recommend this book for all Christians, for anyone who needs something for study purposes, and those who seek a better understanding of sin, how to be saved, and the love God has for us.
