Review of A Dream For Peace
"A Dream for Peace" by Dr. Ghoulem Berrah is an autobiography that chronicles his remarkable journey from his early years in Aïn Beïda, Algeria, during French colonial rule, to his later accomplishments as an Ivorian ambassador and activist. The book highlights Berrah’s significant contributions to Algeria’s independence, starting from his time as a medical student at the University of Bordeaux. Despite facing numerous challenges, including discrimination and racism, Berrah demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, led various associations, and provided healthcare to the underprivileged. His dedication to the cause of independence was so profound that he was willing to risk his life. The book also details his experiences in medical college, where he often had to change his sleeping arrangements for safety reasons. Berrah’s resilience and determination eventually led him to America, where he earned a degree. To uncover the full story of his inspiring life and achievements.
Discovering that Dr. Berrah, a medical practitioner, also had a profound vision for peace across a continent was astonishing. Learning about his background as a former diplomat clarified why he could so effectively communicate his ideas through his book. Dr. Berrah’s exceptional choice of words and his ability to address sensitive topics like warfare and colonization with finesse are impressive. The book reveals numerous delightful insights, with the author’s personal experiences and interactions with notable figures forming the core of this engaging narrative. The inclusion of photographs further enriches the story, providing visual context that enhances understanding. Dr. Berrah’s descriptions are filled with wisdom and affection, focusing on the positive aspects of his actions. Particularly intriguing is his account of his Catholic spouse and their successful interfaith marriage.
The thing that I liked most about this book is that it contains solutions to many problems, including political, scientific, religious, and even marital problems. I could not even believe how Dr. Berrah was able to do lots of things in his life with those themes as major concerns. He stopped his political activities to focus on scientific education in America, where he found out that gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria could be prevented from synthesizing DNA. Dr. Berrah’s bravery and ingenuity were truly admirable, driving him to achieve academic excellence beyond his expectations. The chronological order of events made it easy to follow the story, and the graphic presentations added a layer of authenticity. I found nothing to dislike about this book. It was exceptionally well edited.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about Algeria’s independence. It is also an interesting book for readers intending to cultivate good traits such as flexibility and persistence. Hence, the dialogue and reconciliation aspects of the book ensure that the text is relevant to anyone who would like to advocate for non-violent, peaceful societies. In particular, it will be useful for representatives of such fields as international relations, diplomacy, conflict resolution, and peace activism. I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
