Review of Coming Full Circle: Healing Trauma Using Psychedelics
Coming Full Circle: Healing Trauma Using Psychedelics by Shannon Duncan is an informed guide to the process of using psychedelics for medical and therapeutic purposes. It covers important topics such as safety, the importance of good support mechanisms, and how to find proper guidance. It is also full of insightful, wise advice that demonstrates the author’s extensive experience on this topic.
The book reflects the author’s desire to help others find the healing potential of psychedelics as he did. I appreciate the seriousness with which the author addresses possible risks; he takes actions like including a legal disclaimer about potential legal issues related to the book’s subject matter and issuing straightforward warnings about knowing one’s boundaries. Duncan also does not mince words about the danger of false guidance from people who claim to be more experienced with psychedelics than they are. I thought that the chapter on questions to ask when looking for a guide was a great addition, especially for those new to psychedelics.
I enjoyed Duncan’s writing style as well. He seamlessly weaves in humour in between the helpful anecdotes and detailed explanations that help readers better comprehend the subject matter. There are also some fitting quotes, and Duncan finds ways to weave in humour there, too. The book also does not rely on the reader having any prior understanding of psychedelics. Duncan ensures that even a complete beginner can understand what he is talking about. His genuine enthusiasm to share his knowledge is evident.
While the content was good, it could be repetitive, especially in the beginning. It felt as if the author was beating a dead horse, repeating the same concepts over and over before allowing the book to progress, hence the point deduction.
When reading, there are some possible triggers to be mindful of. There are mentions of substance abuse and alcohol abuse. There is also mention of a traumatic childhood and how that contributed to the author’s need for medicinal work. Nothing too graphic is detailed, but it is worth taking note of.
Overall, I would rate this book a 4 out of 5. I really enjoyed the content, and it urged me to examine some of my instinctive responses and evaluate what happens in my body when certain things occur. I recommend this book to those open to experimental therapy methods.
