Play Golf Better Faster: The Little Golf Bag Book by Kalliope Barlis is an all-encompassing guide that aims to turn a beginner golfer into a professional player. The mental side of golf is stressed by the writer, which is aligning mind with body to improve efficiency. In NLP, the author explains neuro-linguistic programming as a system that improves thinking through eyes, ears, and feelings all together to bring about consistency in playing. The book also highlights the significance of making memorable shots for every game and provides the “Swiss pattern for golfing excellence” for players’ technique improvements.

The book has some practical exercises that are aimed at helping golfers change their mindset in order to start seeing themselves playing at higher levels and work systematically up to them. It emphasizes practicing purposefully and mastering basic skills such as aim, alignment, and balance. Another case discussed by the author is Sidehill, Uphill, and Downhill, among others, where strategies are given on how one can align himself while playing from such places. In the book, there is an elaborate discussion on preparing for play, including setting goals, following routines, and using mental and physical methods that will enable a person to score as intended.

There are two aspects I didn’t like about this book: First, it was overloaded with specific terms used in golf, thus making it difficult for non-golfers who aren’t conversant with this sports language. Secondly, by doing so, the author has made it less comprehensive since beginners or those outside of the golf domain cannot read or understand what she writes. Its appeal becomes limited because it only speaks to those who understand, rather than reaching out to diverse audiences. The technical vocabulary might be too advanced for people who do not play golf. They may not fully understand the tactics and suggestions provided, despite the simple and clear language of this book. For these reasons, I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is a must-read for all levels of golfers who want to take their games more seriously. Be it an amateur seeking to perfect his or her skills or a professional golfer looking forward to grasping both the physical and emotional aspects of the game, the book is perfectly edited.

The pictorial descriptions throughout the book were extremely helpful in visualizing the concepts being explained. Barlis’ use of images to support her explanations made it easier for me to grasp the techniques and apply them in my game. This visual aid was a great addition to the book, enhancing my understanding of the content.
