Review of Incredible Spy Stories of WWII
Incredible Spy Stories of WWII is a book on nine incredible women spies and agents who served in the Second World War by former executive personal assistant, passionate traveller and author Nel Mead. As an enthusiast of world history, I happily chose this book to delve deep into the intricacies of the Second World War.
This is a well-researched book on nine female spies namely Nancy Wake, Virginia Hall, Noor Inayat Khan, Pearl Witherington, Krystyna Skarbek, Vera Atkins, Violette Szabo, Amy Elizabeth Thorpe and Andree Borrel. Here, the author vividly depicts their contribution in the war for the allied countries against the Nazi oppression. Their bravery, patriotism, and sacrifice proved them the true treasure of the Allied powers.
First Mead describes the folly of the policy of appeasement and how it fuelled the greed and aggression of fascist powers. World War II ensured women's participation in factories as workers were taken as soldiers but production must be continued. In the beginning, women were just allowed to serve the auxiliary units and could not participate actively but later they were accepted with the changing situations.
According to the author, women were more efficient than men in their jobs as secret agents. Their speaking skills, sensitivity and also sexual appeal became powerful weapons to divulge secrets from the enemies. There was no scope to feel them weak as they embraced torture and even death without any complaint for a greater cause. But they were often mistreated and devoid of the bare minimum at the end of their services.
The author decorates the chapters with inspiring quotes from famous persons and attaches pictures of these dauntless women to make her narrative more authentic. Her detailed and clear narration of historical events shows her deep research and engagement on this subject.
I enjoyed reading the true events and personal stories of these spies. I was greatly touched by how a writer, leg amputee, and beauty pageant sacrificed their lives to fight against their enemies. Their risk-taking capacity, presence of mind, and unfaltering love for freedom inspired me greatly. There is nothing I can say against this book.
Moreover, the book is professionally edited without any typos. I would love to give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars for its elaborate and clear manifestation of the lives of these nine women with all their capabilities and flaws. I would like to recommend this book to all who want to read authentic inspiring life stories with a historical touch.
