Having been a seasoned Call of Duty zombie killer, I figured my knowledge of the zombie apocalypse was up to par. I did not realize how wrong I was until I read Dave Robertson’s The Ultimate Guide to Zombies. This book covers all things zombies from where they originated in history, to their influence in entertainment and media.
Robertson begins by explaining where the first zombie sighting appeared. More mainstream zombies are a result of a dangerous virus; but the first known documentation of a zombie comes at the hand of an evil Voodoo priest, or a bokor. Allegedly, in the early 1900s, the bokor caused a man in Haiti to appear dead. Once he was buried, the bokor dug up the body and revived him through magic, only to become his mindless, dead-eyed slave. From this story, zombies morphed into the diseased, brain-seeking undead that we have come to know and love.
The author follows the timeline of zombies’ first appearance on the big screen. He also mentions the characteristics of the zombies in each movie and how they were influenced. Robertson gives his recommendation for which zombie movies are the most entertaining and the most terrifying. Any zombie lover would enjoy reading this segment, if only to expand their zombie movie repertoire.
For me, the most interesting part of Robertson’s survival guide was the section on the physiological make up of a zombie. He discusses that while a zombie is the result of magic, radiation, or a virus, it’s important to know how those influences affect the physiology of a human that turns them into a zombie. It was quite in depth and rather scientific. He then segues into how to kill a zombie. He offers different methods of zombie dispatching and cites many different resources of weapon creators.
I give Dave Robertson’s The Ultimate Guide to Zombies 4 out of 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was entertaining without being cheesy. It was clear that Robertson knew his zombie history. His knowledge is invaluable should anything like a zombie apocalypse arise. Although the subject matter was somewhat satirical in nature, the overarching theme is applicable to everyday life: be prepared.
It was fun to read how zombies have been utilized to create awareness for other natural disasters. The author mentions zombie dances and marathons that have raised thousands of dollars for charities and other organizations in need. I appreciated his offer of different resources. He includes several links including the zombie apocalypse preparedness site from the CDC. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to brush up on their zombie knowledge. It is truly a delightful read!
