If there are 8 billion people in this world, then there will be the same number of personal stories. And this figure is incremental. Needless to say, not everyone can turn them into a memoir. Some stories make some people so hopeful, and some convey moral messages to others. Again, some stories help to open our hearts and minds. That is why I like to read memoirs. To seek encouragement.

“On the Receiving End: A Memoir of a Nurse Who Met, Tackled, and Overcame Insurmountable Obstacles, written by Sheila J. Brooks, RN, BSN, is a memoir that explains a nurse’s life experience, which was full of hindrances. She surpassed every obstacle and reached her destined goal. She even fulfilled every role in her life accordingly. As a mother, she worked hard to raise her children with good care. As a professional nurse, she worked hard to complete her duties and responsibilities. Undoubtedly, she is a strong-willed person. She encountered countless accidents and endured enormous pain in her life, but nothing could deflect from her oath to survive. She was also encircled by good friends, family, and coworkers who were so helpful in her cumbersome journey. Indeed, she was fortunate on this side.

In the book, the author used glib language to describe her medical conditions and difficulties in detail. She also recounted medical terminologies with clarity, which was both helpful and easily apprehensive. However, talking about only accidents, misfortunes and dangers throughout the whole book was a little bit monotonous. Nevertheless, some questions arose in my mind relating to her, such as: could she reach her destination at last? Did she find any happiness in her life? Did she get what she wanted? Did she fulfill her responsibilities? What was her strength that made her continue her journey? These curious questions kept me going while reading this memoir. At the end of the book, the author gives her audience some moral messages gained from her personal life experiences. These messages are invaluable to those who have sunk in despair and are searching for inspiration to lift their sunken lives and futures up.

In conclusion, I must say that she always had a positive outlook on life which helped her to carry on. Despite so many mishaps and imminencies, she was so grateful to God that her life was spared once more, as if she had passed all the ordeals of God. This memoir is also a good read for female audiences. It is free from spelling or grammatical errors and exceptionally well-edited. I want to rate it 5 out of 5.
