Dr. Morten. E. Tavel‘s book Health Tips, Myths and Tricks: A physician’s advice, is a non-fiction, Medical Science reference book. It was professionally published in 2015 by Brighton Publishing LLC. The book has a very broad scope which covers a multitude of topics.
This book is divided into the three sections stated in the title. Every topic within the sections has its own chapter, making for quick reference of specific issues. I like the book’s mix of scientific jargon with simple English. The author used humor and sarcasm at places to lighten the mood but maintaining the seriousness of the subject matter.
Dr. Tavel exhibits honesty in his writing. He does not sensationalize or promote certain beliefs over others. He declares information that has not been proven as such and also admits to information lacking on a particular topic. If more research is necessary on a topic he clearly states so. He exposes fellow colleagues that spread false information and advertising, such as Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Robert Atkins.
The author focuses on common health conditions and foods in order to remain relevant to the majority of readers. There are issues that come up more than once, however, the author does not reiterate previously discussed points. The topics are separated clearly, one can go straight to a specific discussion without having to read everything about an issue. The lengths of the chapters are variable, depending on the topics. Some topics need extensive discussion while others are short. The more controversial a topic, the lengthier the chapter.
I found it very useful that where possible the author offered practical assistance. The chapter on bottled water includes a toll-free number and a website where one can seek assistance on the safeness of drinking water. He also gives directions on how to go about dealing with water contamination. This book is very useful to own as a family, an individual or even a place of business, it is that versatile in its application.
Some other topics include: hand drying: paper towels or blower; Probiotics and health: a mixed bag - Facts and Myths; Commercial Air Travel: How safe is it?; The Polygraph (“Lie Detector”) Test: Itself the biggest lie?
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I highly recommend it to all age groups and all genders. It is an easy read with sources to all information given. We live in an era where we are constantly being given information from different platforms. Books such as this one help with verifying the truthfulness of it all.
