Review of Mimsy
Mimsy cum laude by Don Blossom is a captivating and poignant memoir set in the United States during the mid-1990s. Blossom's narrative is deeply personal, recounting a haunting love story that spans decades. The book opens in 2020, where the author experiences a near-death episode that brings him face-to-face with a figure from his past: Marilyn “Mimsy” Cosic, his first true love. This unexpected visit prompts a reflective journey back to 1968, unearthing memories of their brief but intense relationship.
The story begins with young Don Blossom’s decision to attend Grove City College in Pennsylvania, a choice that would forever alter the course of his life. It is in a college snack bar that he first encounters Mimsy, sparking an immediate and powerful connection that swiftly evolves from friendship to romance. Their love blossoms over four months, leading to plans for marriage. However, this promising future is abruptly derailed when Mimsy disappears without explanation, leaving Don with nothing but questions.
Blossom's memoir delves deep into the intricacies of relationships and the enduring impact they can have. He reflects on the role of fate, mental health, and family dynamics, and explores how religious and familial expectations can steer us down unexpected paths. These themes resonate strongly throughout the book, offering profound insights into the human condition.
While the narrative is compelling and engaging, particularly in the beginning and middle sections, it occasionally shifts into a more didactic tone. The detailed exploration of Mimsy's history, though interesting, sometimes detracts from the romantic essence of the story, making parts of the memoir slightly boring. This shift in focus is one of the few drawbacks of the book, and the reason why it is fair for me to deduct a star and give it a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
Lastly, the memoir is richly illustrated with photographs, providing a visual connection to the people and places described, which enhances the reader's experience. The book is impeccably edited, maintaining a steady and coherent pace throughout.
Despite some minor flaws, Mimsy cum laude is a moving and introspective tale that effectively explores themes of love, loss, and the complexities of human relationships. It is free of harsh profanity, violence, or explicit content, making it suitable for mature teens and older readers. Don Blossom's ability to weave a heartfelt story of lost love and personal growth makes this memoir a worthwhile read for anyone interested in a deeply personal and reflective love story.
