Review of UNEMPLOYABLE
Unemployable - How AI Transformed My Work and Life by Alysia Silberg seemed like a book about the current buzz, AI so I went into the review without much thought and expectation. I was wrong, and I am glad that I was wrong. This book comes with a disclaimer at the very beginning, “This book was written and produced by a genuine human being. No AIs were used to write or tell the story!” while I'd love to read how AI transformed Alysia’s life, however, a book written by AI would have been a complete disappointment. Therefore, thanks to the author for calling this out.
Alysia, from the very beginning of the narration, bared her soul to capture the raw, authentic side of the human experience; her vulnerability travelled throughout the book, making it an unfiltered portrayal of her life. The narration started when Alysia was six and how she admired a pair of pink roller skates, only to realise she never wanted them. In the midst of innocent desire and purchasing the pink roller skates, her first business plan materialised. A young, determined soul, dreamt of manifest her own destiny. However, it would be wrong to say that Alysia never had to look back. She never stopped looking back, only to take note of how far she had come since then. Her extreme fondness for her father became a guiding light while she navigated her journey as an actuary, a schoolteacher, a university professor, an entrepreneur, a VC and in her role with UN Women. Throughout the book Alysia’s courage and determination were the key highlights.
Unemployable - How AI Transformed My Work and Life by Alysia Silberg is an inspiring read. As I progressed through the book, my admiration for Alysia grew stronger. In the initial days, her partner, Darren, ran a successful digital design company and later became a co-owner of a top digital agency. Alysia’s never-ending hunger for knowledge eased her journey towards the new invisible era of the digital ecosystem. I hold Alysia in high regard; she is not only a dreamer but also knows how to convert her dreams into tangible realities. Her conviction gave birth to Digital By Design, a digital marketing company she founded with Darren. Alysia is an achiever; her journey was long and eventful. However, this particular book doesn’t clarify how AI transformed Alysia’s life. Apart from her digital marketing company and the last few chapters, which touched on the surface of redefining job roles due to AI, life on Mars, and robots, there was not much depth to engage with this very buzz-worthy topic of AI. While the book offers motivation, it fails to provide an understanding of how AI is reshaping the world.
For me, this book gets 3 out of 4 stars or 4 out of 5 stars; one less because of the misleading subtitle. If you can ignore the subtitle of the book, then this is a stimulating petite version of a dreamer’s life. I hope other readers will enjoy reading her journey as much as I did. Lastly, kudos to the editor for bringing Alysia's remarkable journey to life with such expertise. The editing is polished, with no typos or grammatical errors, making the book a smooth reading experience.
