Who Told You That You Were Naked?, is a nonfiction book with 205 pages written by a retired Presbyterian minister named Bill Combs. It starts out in Alaska as he recollects his childhood memory of basking in the beauty of the aurora borealis. He uses this memory as an analogy to add insight to the reader's perception to certain areas of the Bible. Then he takes us to the Garden of Eden to set the scene of what Adam might have been experiencing before actually eating the forbidden fruit. Throughout the rest of the book, he goes back and forth from some of the dramatized Bible stories, to the actual biblical reference, and the in depth theological explanation of what is being read. It ventures to many different stories of the Bible, such as Cane and Able, the Lepor, the Centerion, Jesus’ sacrifice, hearing God’s audible voice, Moses and many more. He also tells his amazing testimonies of his personal experiences that relate to the book. At the end of every chapter, there are study questions that will enhance the learning experience even further.
His dramatization of the Bible stories made them easy to relate to and left me with a better understanding of each individual character. I liked how he showed the whole verse he was referencing instead of just the chapter and verse to look up later. It can unnecessarily complicate the learning process when you have to navigate the Bible every time a reference is quoted. I personally loved the testimonies he used, they helped to remind me that God still works in my life and I’m not just getting a history lesson.
I did struggle with following along with the Bible study aspect, personally I would have gotten more out of the book as a group study. That is just my struggle so I don’t want that to deter anyone from reading it.
I rated this book 4 out of 4 stars because it seems to be a well written and researched, insightful book to help people reexamine their thoughts on the Bible in more depth. I do not have a degree in theology nor do I claim to be overly knowledgeable in the subject, so I cannot attest to the facts of this book.
I would recommend this book for anyone looking to enlighten their understanding of the Bible, strengthen their relationship with God, or just wanting to do an in depth study of some of the Bible. I also think it would be a great tool to use in an adult bible study.
