Review of Breaking the Mold: Remodeling your Way to Success
“Breaking the Mold: Remodeling your Way to Success” by Fabian Videla narrates a practical approach to starting and maintaining a business, targeting long-term growth and profit. The book emphasizes the ups and downs in life, and how you respond to a down affects how well you do on the next up. The author has provided an A to Z guide on starting a business by sharing each element of his experiences, down to the smallest minute details. Even though the primary application of the notion is for the construction industry, I think it applies to all business types.
The book opens with an overview of the author's humble origins, his first venture, and the sacrifices made by his family—particularly his grandmother. Videla has skillfully woven his past experiences into the lessons he learned. Each chapter concludes with a brief description of the lesson's core ideas, which are also listed at the end of the book. I found it quite easy to read and retain the information in these brief notes, titled "Lesson of Success."
The author has categorized and arranged the key components needed to launch and manage a business in a way that is easy to comprehend. The "how" part of every requirement has been explored step by step, from completing legal documentation to opening a bank account, backing up with insurance and a reserve account, obtaining a business and professional license, and computing annual revenue, overhead costs, actual job costs, and most importantly, profit. There's more to it than that!
As I read further, it became clear to me that what I was reading was, in fact, a road map or key to being a successful entrepreneur. The author provides an exclusive look inside his contract business later in the book, along with a wealth of knowledge and advice that comes only from experience.
I grabbed this book at random out of curiosity, but I soon got glued to it. I'm amused at the narrative and how easy the author makes running a business seem. The book has changed my perspective on business and entrepreneurs. "Never miss an opportunity to learn and always be open to it." is a major takeaway, and I am planning to stick with it for life.
The book is segmented and organized, and the narrative clearly and concisely flows with no ease from one chapter to the next. On a 5-point rating scale, I would give this self-help book a five since it is unique, entertaining, and inspiring.
