Who Told You That You Were Naked by William E. Combs is a book that depicts the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. This book, while written from the author’s point of view, is biblical based and tells the story of the beginning of time in a new, refreshing way. The author intertwines his personal experiences in the book to make the story more relatable to the reader.
The author starts the book with the story of Adam and Eve. The author breaks the story down section by section to help give the reader a better understanding of the beginning of time. The author explains how the “fall of man” and our “human sin nature” entered the world and what that means for humankind. Before Adam and Eve partook in indulging in the forbidden fruit, their lives were carefree and full of bliss. But after sin entered the world, they were overcome with feelings of doubt and shame. But that is not were the story of Adam and Eve ends. God did not want to shame Adam and Eve, but to show them that He will still provide and take care of them even amongst their sinful nature.
The author uses the story of Adam and Eve to be a starting point to discuss the other famous stories in the bible. The author explains the effect that the “first sin” has had on the rest of the world. Adam and Eve were not the only people who went against God’s commands. Many others also had to deal with the consequences of sin in their lives. The author tells the stories of Paul, Moses and Abraham to explain that even though humankind has a sinful nature, God will still use each experience to benefit His kingdom.
William E. Combs is a Presbyterian pastor who was married to his wife Miriam for forty-eight years. Combs holds a Masters in Divinity Degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Combs not only depicts his educational opinion throughout this book, but also personal experiences that are relatable to the book. Combs also references many bible scripture verses so the reader can see clearly that Combs is getting his information from the bible and not from any other source.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed reading this book because it gave me a fresh perspective to stories that I have heard hundreds of times throughout my life. Honestly, when I decided to read this book, I did not think that I would learn anything new than what I already knew. But Combs tells the stories in a way that I have never heard before and I have gained more insightful knowledge after ready this book. I also really enjoyed the discussion questions that were at the end of each chapter. This book would be great for personal study or for a small group at a church or school to read and discuss.
