The Successful Business Startup Action Guide by Husam S. AlSaleh is a nonfiction self-help book for new entrepreneurs. The book comprises five parts and deals with different factors that contribute to the success of a business venture. The topics dealt with are understanding market dynamics, offering value to ideal customers, the resources for success, overcoming the pitfalls, and closing the strategy-to-execution gap. The author introduces the readers to his background, his family business of selling cars, and his early startup business. He talks about identifying the problem that a business would try to solve for customers, finding answers, and forming a strong strategy. Emphasizing the importance of strategy, he elaborates on the framework of a strategy, market research about products and customers, and the potential pitfalls.

The author has very effectively used his knowledge and experience to discuss every aspect of business. He talks about the competition in the market, the powers of the customers and suppliers, and the leadership skills required to avoid pitfalls. His explanations of the financial aspect, resources, and managing finances are remarkable. His in-depth analysis of the work force, employees, customers, influencers, and end users is quite informative and useful.

I liked the author’s approach to the subject and his writing style, which is simple and engaging. He has explained every topic in detail and with examples, recalling his own experiences as a new entrepreneur and the mistakes he made and learned from. He has mainly taken two examples—his father’s car business and a hypothetical new startup of a coffee shop. He has also used various other examples, quotes, anecdotes, and suggestions from different sources. But most of all, his explanations of Michael Porter’s work on modern market strategy and the five forces that impact the success, sustenance, and profitability of a business are invaluable. The suggestions of Dr. Rebecca Homkes on forming a powerful strategy and its framework are comprehensive and explained well. The book is very well-written, and I did not notice any negative aspects of the book. There is no reason to deduct a star, and I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars.

I believe the book will prove very helpful to entrepreneurs. The tips and suggestions are quite doable, and the author also invites the readers to reach him for assistance and advice. I would suggest it to new entrepreneurs as well as aspiring people who wish to set up their own profitable business and succeed at it.
