Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks by Morton E. Tavel, MD is a medical report which compiles most of the myths and their corresponding facts going around the globe at present. This book is written after a very thorough research and a lot of references have been cited at the end of the book.
This book consists of three parts and its title could already give the readers an overview of what to expect. The first section is intended for giving “Tips” in maintaining good health. From losing weight and better food choices to other daily wellness concerns, this part got it covered. The second section is about debunking “Myths” and health misconceptions. The author included both the common ones and other random yet interesting topics that I’m sure some readers never even thought before. Finally, the author openly mentioned how some companies “Rips” their consumers by feeding them with deceptive information. Stratagems designed to take consumer’s money in exchange for either useless or dangerous products are presented.
There are some novel details which are not available easily online. I especially liked the point where the author gave the comparison between molasses and honey. DASH diet for people suffering with hypertension is explained in very simple sentences which can be understood by common reader and following the steps provided in the book is also very easy. I also find it novel as many few resources mention this diet.
A very beautiful description is portrayed explaining why human body likes junk food so much. I was quite fascinated by the part where author delves into process of making junk food. The way sugar and salt are combined together to trick the brain and the way mouth relishes the crunchiness of the junk food. However the author also suggests tricks to reduce the excess of junk food.
There are many informative facts I learned from this book. However there are some things which I did not like. First is, the book is too long. The author has a tendency to be over narrative. At many points in the book I felt that the description which took a few pages could have been easily explained in a few paragraphs or at some places one paragraph. I especially find the chapter about ‘salt’ very repetitive and unnecessarily dragging. Also the alignment of the book is not justified. At some places I found the full stop missing. At every bullet point the number of bullet is in another line while the sentence starts from the next line. This I did not like personally.
Finally, I recommend this book to every one. I rate this book a 3 out of 4. Despite all the flaws I have mentioned in the book.
