Deceit was a surprisingly good book. The story started almost immediately and grabbed my attention. I liked that I didn’t have to read through years of backstory before the plot progressing. There was a chapter or two that centered around the male main character and the female main character’s relationship prior to the story which only really served for me to think that maybe Vernon should’ve known better before marrying Linda. If he’d paid attention to her red flags then, perhaps he wouldn’t have had to go through what he did.
The story did get a bit confusing at parts and sometimes the writing made me feel for Linda as a victim and not the cold hearted adulteress I think she was supposed to be painted out to be. A few times I did catch myself thinking, “what could’ve made her the way she is?” She certainly was not the victim in this story but the author kind of made himself out to be an absolute saint. I’d honestly love to hear Linda’s side if only just to understand why she did what she did.
The book did a wonderful job finishing up the story at present and then giving small updates about the what has happened since everything unfolded for all the parties present. That was really nice considering most books just end and you’re left wondering what happened to everyone. And since this was based on a true story, I did find myself googling the characters to see if I could learn a little bit more.
All in all, I was presently surprised by who quickly this book gripped me and held on until the end. I actually caught myself discussing the book and wire tapping after I’d finished it at work.
If you’re needing a quick read and are a fan of true crime type novels, definitely give this one a try.
