The Ultimate Guide to Zombies is written by Dave Robertson. It is a non-fiction book. Robertson discusses on various topics relating to zombies, their imagination and explains how it entered the American public consciousness and its evolution. It further touches on zombies as metaphors in films, their anatomy, scientific origins of zombies in fiction, zombie popularity as compared to other monster types, weapons and tactics for a zombie apocalypse, zombie as a fandom, zombies interpreted in biblical texts.
The book’s content majorly borrows from zombie films ranging from the 1930s to 2016. Dave recommends people who wish to discover more about the zombie pop culture; this could be found in films, books and weapon shops. Moreover he gives a good overview of Zombies in his guide.
The author gives any good Zombie fan adequate and necessary information they need to survive. The flow of information is clearly put into sections making it easier for one to grasp a lot of information with ease. Furthermore, it is concise and contains relevant information. I was pleased with the fact that unlike most of the guides I have come across – Robertson dwells sufficiently on this topic. This makes it an easy digest. In addition to that it borrows greatly from films, thus, making it easy and a friendly guide to zombies.
Additionally, the author has researched widely on the topics in this book to arm the reader with candid information. Robertson not only covers on zombie’s pop culture but also looks into the social and cultural history of zombies, as well as general ideas in neuroscience, virology, and parasitology. The zombie anatomy is a wonderful area especially for those who would wish to understand the brain anatomy. However, this book dwells majorly from American sources hence fails to touch extensively on Zombies from other cultures. It also lacks the author’s insight regarding the subject matter making the book to lose its originality. The book is not professionally edited since it is not short of grammatical errors. The time factor of different movies is not looked into yet they were coined at different times.
I would give this book a rating of 2 out of 4 since I find it quite informative. The compilation is sufficient however it fails to touch on all cultures making it capture a small proportion of the audience (Americans). I would highly advise anyone wishing to be become zombie fan to go for this intriguing book.
