Health Tips, Myths and Tricks: A Physician’s Advice by Morton E. Tavel, M.D. is precisely that. It is an information hub about the food we eat. He starts out with Tips, where he goes on about food facts that we don’t really think about, much less do we understand, but we should know. Then he tackles the Myths we guiltily adhere to, hoping for magic solutions, and reveals which among these are to be trusted and which are just plain false. His Tricks then gives us ideas how to better take on food and health claims that abound.

It is not a book that I would consider to read in one sitting. It is overflowing with information, and I feel the need to process and research about them. A lot of the things discussed are very interesting, and he attempts to make these information palatable to the layman's eyes. The topics are ones we are very much aware of, the food we do eat and eating ideas we have heard from people several times.

Even though he gets technical (which I appreciate; it shows that the information did come from research), he also shows he knows and understands what he’s talking about. By translating these research-based information into a language that regular people can appreciate, he is able to actually reach the consciousness of the reader. He takes in consideration the food we usually eat daily, and explains how the healthful qualities could be maximized through proper intake, and sometimes even how to prepare the food.

Content-wise, the book is very good. But the layout and visual impact needs a lot of attention. For all the health benefits that can be picked up from it, I was close to having a headache because of the poor layout. I don’t think it was edited professionally; the mistakes are practically jumping out of the pages.

I read the PDF version. First thing I noticed was it did not include the cover of the book. Even when the book is closed in the app, it just shows the title page. That’s not pleasing to the eyes, and could have made me skip reading it. Including the cover of the book in the PDF version would add to the face value of the book.

The chapter titles also had Greek alphabet adorning them. The author might have thought that it adds to the visual impact. But it causes confusion. If he wanted to have these, they could be smaller than the chapter title text, and some space between them and the title text could highlight the chapter title better.

With all of the lists included in the book, the layout of these need to be identical from start to finish. A better layout would also make it easier to read. All of the lists should be reviewed by the author, as these are where most of the typo errors can be found.

The overall topic of the book and the approach in which it is presented is good, but the visual layout of the book has greatly harmed the impact of the text.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars.
