Deceit tells the story of a southern divorce in the 70s, the deceptions leading to the end of a stable family and the methods necessary for a dedicated father to keep his children. Vernon Baumgard weds his college sweetheart, and together they build a life with their two children. However, Dr. Ewing, who delivered their second child, decided that he wanted to see much more of Vernon’s wife than was medically necessary. The two begin an affair that draws Linda away from her husband, children and home, and further into becoming a servant to his needs and desires.
The story is related from the viewpoint of Vernon, explaining his determination in keeping his children and utilizing various methods to obtain the proof he knows will be required in a court of law. He taps the house phones, hires a lawyer, and employs private investigators to build an arsenal of evidence to aid him in maintaining custody of his children. The book includes insight into the court proceedings, not only the divorce and custody, but the suits against the doctor himself that follow. Although the book could effectively end upon the reader seeing the finality of the judicial findings, the author includes an extension that explains his reasonings, tells the reader how all parties involved ended up years later, and elaborates on the actual cases and headlines the public may want to delve into later.
