“Deceit: A true story of domestic infidelity and betrayal with salacious details recorded by wiretap” by Vernon Baumrind was to me an incredible lesson in restraint and grace in the face of intense feelings of loss and pain. Baumrind captured his feelings within his writing so well that I felt his pain myself. While most people would seek vengeance the narrator showed his impeccable character through his ability to put his children first despite his pain and anger. Baumrind's ability to remain composed and keep what he knew of the infidelity and his plan secret, all while caring for his children, was remarkable. The excerpts from the wiretap were salacious indeed(not for younger eyes). The fact that he had listened to all the indecent happenings between his wife and her lover all while maintaining his sanity and staying calm is incredible. Due to the recordings from the wiretap I can't say that this narrative is completely one sided as the evidence of this great betrayal is solid. However I did feel like the author may have left out details from before the affair. As a reader am I supposed to believe everything was great, not perfect as he does mention things weren't perfect, but good enough that they were happy until all of a sudden his wife is this totally different, heartless, sociopathic deviant? For that reason alone I couldn’t give 5 stars, as I felt there may have been a bit more to the story. Overall this book was fantastically written and edited. This true story accurately portrays a man about to lose everything he loves and spent thirteen years building but still manages to hold himself together to fight for his children without once tainting their relationship with their mother who broke his heart over and over again with every scandolous phone call that was recorded.
