The Ultimate Guide to Zombies by Dave Robertson is a non-fiction book about zombies. The book is filled with interesting information about every aspect of zombies one could ever imagine. The book covers zombies in all mediums – TV, movies, music, and even an alcoholic drink called “the zombie.” However, the book is very genre specific and not everyone will favor the book. Therefore, I am rating this book 2 out of 4 stars.
The book begins with a detailed history from reported zombies in reality to a history of how zombies took over movies and mainstream television. From there Robertson shows the different types of zombies, how to kill them, and how to defend oneself from a potential zombie apocalypse. The book is full of interesting facts that aren’t common knowledge even to the biggest zombie fans.
One of my favorite aspects in the book was the history provided by the author. He took time and went into great detail to show how the zombie has progressed over several decades to an ever-increasing popularity in mainstream media. The interesting facts also maintained my interest in the book. Again, the author provided great detail while presenting facts about zombies although they are drawn from a number of movies, games, and television shows. It kept my interest and made me want to continue reading.
The major area of concern for me in the book was the sections titled, “zombie media.” In my opinion these sections were not needed as they only repeated information I had already read in the preceding sections of the book. These sections slowed down the pace of the book and were unnecessary additions. Also, some chapters in the book seemed to be interruptions. For instance, the chapter about zombies’ names in different culture was short and mostly a repeat of information provided earlier in the book. It would have made more sense to me to delete this chapter and provide that brief information at more opportune moments when discussing concepts in other chapters. Some of the information provided also seemed to be out of place meaning the information would have made more sense in different chapters. An example of this is how Robertson discusses zombie anatomy in one chapter but also discusses the anatomy of zombies in the chapter on how to kill zombies. I think the physiology aspect would have fit better in the zombie anatomy section while giving a reference to that chapter when discussing how to kill a zombie.
Overall, the book was interesting. The only reason I did not give this book 3 stars was because it is genre specific. A reader would have to enjoy zombies in order to enjoy the book. Therefore, I could only recommend the book to those I knew enjoyed the zombie/horror genre. However, I would recommend the book to those I know enjoyed that particular genre.
