The Author gave analysis on the importance of family and importance of family legacy. From age 10 the parent taught them values and hard work irrespective of the gender of the family member, commercial fishing, ice walker history with a terrific end of some members of the Leblanc, spur courage.
The dreadful Winter, Augusts used the US Mail to deliver letters and parcels across Lake Michigan, with his route changing daily based on the ice coverage of the lake. He would often travel across the ice to various islands in the area, encountering hazards such as thin ice and cold winds.
Walking on ice can be unpredictable and dangerous, with sudden changes in terrain from solid ice to wide cracks and mounds of ice. It is important to be properly equipped before attempting to walk on ice, as failure to do so could result in death.
The text describes the story of how Helen Leblance (Mother) convinced their father to bring home unfileted fish, despite their family only eating cod at Christmas.
After explaining that her family had eaten various types of fish before she married their father, he began bringing home a variety of fish including whitefish, trout, herring, menominee, and smoked chubs for Friday night supper.
The parents made a great effort to ensure there was enough food on the table, especially fish. In the 1950s and early 1960s, the father would barter fish for milk, vegetables, bread and cereal in Charlevoix and Tawas. The narrator recalls going with him to trade fish for a pail of potato chips called Vita Boy Chip.
