Who Told You That You Were Naked? A Refreshing Reexamination of the Garden of Eden is a work of Christian non-fiction written by retired Presbyterian minister William E. Combs. While it is not necessary that one be a Biblical scholar, I do recommend that the reader have at least a brief understanding of the concepts of sin, salvation, and faith as introduced in the Old Testament, namely through stories of the Garden of Eden. It is through his book that the author hopes to challenge our long-held views of these very concepts.
During this journey to enlightenment, the picturesque words of William E. Combs provide for us an embellished retelling of the largely well-known stories of the early days of civilization. Someone who adheres to a more orthodox view of the Bible and its teachings may not appreciate such embellishments. However, I think it is the author's intent to simply aid us in being able to better identify with those discussed in these early verses, thereby enabling us to see past the all too familiar words and phrases of Genesis. Once we allow ourselves to see past the vernacular, we can then begin our walk on a clearer pathway towards the understanding of the underlying messages of these stories.
I appreciate the time Combs put into not only thoroughly editing his book, but also providing the reader with the tools necessary to get the most out of reading it. For example, instead of simply making reference to certain important Bible verses, William E. Combs includes those particular verses in their entirety as quotes in his writing. I find this helpful as the reader, because it is easier and less distracting when all necessary or suggested information is in one place. There are also study questions provided at the end of every chapter. I can see this being an attractive tool to a Bible study group, but the questions are also very helpful to someone reading in a more personal setting. There is a lot of information to take in and new ideas to consider, and these questions can really help the reader focus on and evaluate all of this.
Combs holds both a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary. He uses the knowledge he gained during his studies as well as personal life experiences to support his ideas. Even the reader who disagrees with Combs on his standpoints will find something worthwhile in reading this book. There are definitely avenues one can take for a lively debate. I, personally, found myself prompted to do some research of my own, as this book brought to light some ideas for which I wanted to explore further. One such idea is that we may have previously interpreted the story of the Fall of Man incorrectly, which is at least due in part to the difficulties of properly translating one language to another.
This book is not your run of the mill Bible companion, but it is more than worth your consideration. It is my sincere pleasure to give Who Told You That You Were Naked? A Refreshing Reexamination of the Garden of Eden the rating 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this thought-provoking book to new believers, seasoned believers, as well as those who question whether they even do believe. The author’s purpose in this book is to reexamine sin, salvation, and our redeeming faith. But, it is key for the reader to have an open mind. Without that, new ideas and fresh perspectives will not flourish, regardless of how beautifully conveyed.

I just recently read and reviewed this book, myself, and I agree with you on all points. I got a little bored towards the latter half and struggled to finish, but overall, I enjoyed the book and the many tools used.

I'm glad you also found the book enjoyable. I can see how the latter half would be more of a struggle. I think I may have slowed down a bit towards the end as well. Thank you for your thoughts!MsTri wrote:Excellent review!
