Dr. Tavel’s book Health Tips, Myths and Tricks is a well informed review of medical literature and practice as it relates to drug use, diet, nutrient supplements and physical exercise. His background knowledge and experience in medical science plays a major role in explicating the various stratagems of advertisers, salesmen and manufacturers for sending consumers to a financial black hole.
The book is divided into three parts; the first part covers necessary tips to help in maintaining health and general wellness, the second part draws attention to common misconceptions and prevalent beliefs regarding health and the third part discloses the loopholes upon which unscientific and misguided information thrives.
The culprits to excessive weight, cardiovascular diseases and cancers were listed to include salt, sugar, trans-fat, fast foods, canned products and improper dieting regimen in the first part of this book. The proper lifestyle changes that must be adopted are thoroughly dealt with. The author gives a note of advice on some foods to avoid, those never to underestimate and caution on some OTC drugs.
In the second part, a lot of Myths are debunked about GM foods, energy drinks, organic foods, polygraph, food irradiation, medical checkup, weight loss, raw milk, gluten free diet and bottled water.
In the third part, he suggests ways to know the tricks used for ripping money out of consumers through alternative medical practices and beliefs which has failed scientific procedure.
This book can serve as wellness guide to the reader as well a reference tool to nutritionist and medical professionals or students. If the advice is anything to go by, one could keep the doctor away, at least for some time. The benefits of exercising as illustrated is marvelous, and if overweight is the problem, reduction in sugar intake, avoidance of regular snacking and fast foods , having a breakfast loaded with protein is strictly considerable. Although the author suggests Orlistat if a drug must be taken, I would prefer sticking to dieting and exercise with discipline as the only pill worth taking.
An interesting list of good foods and bad foods are presented. It is astonishing that rice, which is a staple food in some countries is a potent source of arsenic poisoning, one wonders why a medical proclamation has not been raised in such countries. May be, they intuitively practice rinsing and boiling in a lot of water before cooking.
I like the author’s audacity in stating the bad products and the various guises by manufacturers to attract consumers through various facades. This audacity, I believe is borne out of proper conviction backed by scientifically proven evidences and strict adherence to professional ethics. Based on this, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
