Deceit is a captivating memoir, where the author, Vernon Baumrind, recounts and shares his experience and journey of his arduous endeavor to keep his children from the hands of his adulterous wife and her sex-addict gynecologist lover. This memoir begins with the heartbreaking moment when Baumrind discovers his wife's betrayal to his excruciating process of experiencing his wife’s dishonesty firsthand during the process of collecting evidence. The process includes tap-wiring phone conversations to protect Baumrind’s children from their dishonest mother. Deceit is a piece that is filled with woe, treachery, and suffering, but the determination and perseverance of a father’s love and desire to protect his children resulted in the reward of justice, prosperity, and success.

Deceit is a 4 out of 5 stars. The memoir was very well written and did an excellent job of capturing the reader’s attention throughout. Baumrind’s word choice was specific and was able to convey his powerful emotions and thoughts in his memoir. The author's ability to keep the readers engrossed and on the edge of their seats in every part of his memoir is worth noting. His writing was interesting as the characters of his memoirs had intense personalities and thoughts, which the author was able to capture with his words. The rating did not receive full stars as it is a preference in the subject on the reader’s end, however, let us not forget how Baumrind’s work was meticulous in his recountings and it was done well. Deceit was a work filled with emotions, that were felt through the author’s descriptive and excellent word choice. The author’s eloquence in expressing emotions through words was displayed throughout his memoir. Each page was filled with desires, determination, sentiments, and bittersweetness, which the reader felt deeply. It was the vulnerability with which the author shared his story that allowed the reader to simply listen and experience Baumrind’s writing, with a sensitive and feeling heart.

Overall, Deceit was an outstanding and well-versed memoir that did not lack any personality or feeling. There was nothing to find fault with Baumrind’s recounting nor his ability to write to speak to his audience. The author did a magnificent work which is shown throughout his novel. Deceit is filled with many worthy lessons and caution that encourage one to consider their actions before going down a path of destruction. In Deceit, Baumrind was able to make his story known, while also educating about the possibilities of this world. Deceit was a sensational and exceptional read and would make an excellent recommendation to readers who are looking for their next masterpiece to jump into.
