Review of Relish Your Retirement
The book Relish Your Retirement by Florance Philip is a relatable, fun guide on how to enjoy your free time and repurpose your life. It is about rediscovering your sense of self outside of work, school, or whatever else usually defines you.
I like that Ms Philip speaks directly to the reader because it makes the advice, ideas, and encouragement in the book all the more personal. The author understands that retirement is a major milestone and, as with all major milestones, it comes with mixed feelings of dread and anticipation. That understanding allows her to deliver a helpful, personality-infused book.
Notable features of this book are personal anecdotes and interactive activities (such as weekly planners or short response questions designed to help the reader use the ideas in the book, and quotes from the likes of Michaelangelo, Misty Copeland, and Eleanor Roosevelt. These inclusions, especially the follow-along activities, helped me to really connect with what I was reading. I also appreciated how budget-friendly all the ideas were; many were either designed for a low budget or could be easily modified to be so!
The activities in this book are organised in categories such as outdoor activities or mental activities. I appreciate that, rather than just listing things, Ms. Philip provides research-based benefits to everything she suggests. I also appreciate the inclusion of detail in every activity: she suggests modifications and available avenues for those looking to participate in an activity. As someone who frequents my local library, I’m happy that the author suggests local libraries as superb options for community or resources. She also takes into account people’s circumstances, providing options for those with low mobility or those confined to home.
Relish Your Retirement also delivers a relatable medium for all ages. Whether you’re a teenager home from summer break or someone at the end of a long and illustrious career, this book has over 500 ideas for how to fill your newfound free time. I will definitely be checking this book whenever I find myself idle and bored.
Overall, I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend it to anyone with a significant amount of free time to fill.
