In Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician's Advice by Dr. Morton E. Tavel, we explore various popular trends, fads, and flops in the health and wellness industry. In the industry, the overwhelming misinformation makes it very difficult to know what to do for good health. Dr. Tavel gives us his professional opinion backed up by numerous sources and solid research.
This book is indeed divided into the three categories of its title: tips, myths, and tricks. In Tips, the author provides his considered opinions about various health and wellness ideas. In Myths, we are given clear reasons that debunk several popular health fads. And in Tricks, Dr. Tavel who despises snake oil salesmen blatantly rips apart any idea of questionable value and many ideas that are downright dangerous. The chapters in the different categories are named well and allow easy access to the information so you can skip around to your heart's content.
Written in simple language, I really enjoyed reading about things I thought I knew only to get a perspective on them that I might not have considered. I wondered if there is any benefit in human growth hormones to slow aging? And should I be detoxing? I never did find solid ideas behind these trends until I read this book. Dr. Tavel's opinions and ideas are focused on known scientific research giving greater weight to his conclusions.
As a physician, the author also talks about subjects we don't always identify as being health or wellness related. He seems to have included every subject he ever wanted to mention. Such subjects include the chapters on WiFi and on the polygraph test. Dr. Tavel does a brilliant job of revealing the health connections of everything we do.
In the introduction, there is a formatting error among the numbered points of 1, 2, and 3. And I did notice a small error on page 203 in the sentence "A women had been brutally murdered in her apartment." But at the time, I almost missed this one. The organization and style of writing are very well done which made these errors minor and did not detract from the book at all.
I was a little worried about a physician's opinion and treatment of alternative medicine, but Dr. Tavel surprised me. Even on subjects with which he strongly disagreed, the author gave a balanced outlook.
For the clear and simple writing as well as the somewhat humorous delivery of Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician's Advice, I gave this book 4 out of 4 stars. When searching through the current trends, this book provides a timely and thorough understanding of how to stay healthy without throwing your money away. For anyone who wants a general qualified health opinion, Dr. Tavel delivers.
