There and Back There Again by Andrew Alsup presents a challenge to summarize succinctly. Although labeled as a “biography” and a “guidebook for life,” it reads more like disjointed musings akin to the ramblings of someone grappling with schizophrenia. The narrative intermittently delves into potential court cases without substantiating evidence, leaving readers perplexed. Throughout the book, there is an overwhelming sense of anger all through the book. The only part of the book that the author seemed to be happy about was when he was talking about his dogs and the conversations the author reports to have had with his aforementioned dogs.

I have a family member that has been affected by schizophrenia; I found the perspective intriguing, offering a glimpse into the disorder through the author’s lens.

However, beyond this aspect, the book fails to be interesting. The author is probably unmedicated because the book is disconcerting and unsettling. Moreover, the book suffers from glaring editorial oversights, resulting in a jumbled progression of memories and diatribes that render it virtually unreadable.

The author clearly has a conviction that his ideas are significant, but his inability to write in a comprehensible way makes it impossible for him to engage the reader. There and Back There Again is so hard to read that I have to give it 1 out of 5 stars. Its poor writing and terribly edited. If you told me the author randomly selected some old blog post he had written, I would believe you. I advise potential readers to steer clear, as similar content is readily available online for free, rendering this book redundant and best left untouched.

Expanding on this critique, let's delve deeper into the disjointed nature of the narrative. The author's attempt to blend biography with philosophical insights falls flat, as each chapter feels like a disconnected tangent rather than a cohesive exploration of themes. Additionally, the lack of evidence supporting the author's claims regarding potential court cases undermines the credibility of the entire work. Furthermore, the repetitive nature of the author's expressions of anger becomes tiresome, detracting from any potential impact they may have had. Overall, There and Back There Again fails to deliver on its promise of providing meaningful insights into life, instead offering a chaotic and frustrating reading experience.
