Lablance Fish Tales Two by Peter F Lablance stands out as an informative and captivating non-fiction book. This narrative delves into the commercial fishing adventures of the Lablance family on the Great Lakes, spanning generations with a history dating back to the 1800s. The book vividly recounts their experiences moving between lakes, such as Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior, as they pursued their trade. Each family member contributed to the fish tugs, instilling values of hard work and integrity.

Faced with challenges like overregulation by the Michigan Fishing Department in 1972, the Lablance family relocated to Canada. Despite adversities such as cold waters, seasickness, regulatory obstacles, and environmental hazards, the family's unity, resilience, and hard work fortified their bonds. The book features a collection of stories from various commercial fishermen, including Mike, Robert, Jim, Albert, Catherine, Deborah, and James Muscott.

My affection for this book stems from the Lablance family's extraordinary journey, as depicted by the author. The way Emerald and Helen, the parents, imparted values of hard work and integrity to their children resonated with me. Emerald's resilience, notably overcoming challenges like a finger injury, showcased an unwavering commitment to their family business. The intriguing stories, such as the humorous prank on conservation officers and the author trying on a dress for his sister Margaret, added a delightful and personal touch to the narrative. The inclusion of pictures by the author further enriched my reading experience, making "Lablance Fish Tales Two" a book I truly love.

My dislike for this book arises from several drawbacks that impacted my overall experience. The absence of clear chapters made it challenging to follow the narration detracted from the reading flow. The painful account of Paul Albert's death, after his hard work to become a captain, added a sombre note, contributing to my dislike for the book. Despite the author's commendable effort in compiling engaging stories about the commercial fishing world, these drawbacks significantly diminished my enjoyment of the overall reading experience. The book was exceptionally well edited and error-free.

I gave this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars primarily due to its captivating narrative on the Lablance family's commercial fishing legacy. The vivid storytelling, portrayal of resilience, and inclusion of personal anecdotes and pictures significantly contributed to the positive rating. Despite minor drawbacks like the absence of clear chapters and the overall experience was enriched by the author's commendable effort in compiling engaging stories about the commercial fishing world. These factors collectively warranted a solid 4-star rating. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy engaging non-fiction narratives about family legacies, particularly those centred around the challenges and adventures of the commercial fishing industry.
