Review of 28 Disastrous Dates: A (Mostly True) Humourous Memoir
Poppy Mortimer has really seen it all when it comes to bizarre dates. 28 Disastrous Dates by Poppy Mortimer is a series of hilarious, and some rather disturbing, dates that she has been on over the course of 20 years. The hopeless romantic in her wouldn’t stop till she found the love of her life, but even though she has no significant other by the end, she has led a full life. There is so much I could talk about, so allow me to go on a rant about some of my favourite chapters.
Let’s start at Chapter 4, Mr Fodder. This date was absolutely insane. He wanted to “feed her up” so she’d be insecure and wouldn’t leave him! Crazy much? Then Chapter 10 brought Mr Muscles, a man who passed the most reeking farts, and counted them. (He counted 200 a day.)
The most traumatising experience would’ve been in Chapter 12 with Mr Sharmen. The driving… it was horrifying. I can understand Poppy’s panic while driving on the other side of the road, but then her date has an allergic reaction while driving the car, and they nearly swerve off again. Terrifying.
Chapter 19 Mr Say It Don’t Spray It was disgusting. Poor Poppy… I would’ve run off the second he infested my latte with his spit missiles.
Chapter 24, with Mr Third Wheel, was quite a hilarious one. His obsession with his dog Gerald was rather peculiar, and I don’t think I’ll be able to hear the name Gerald again without thinking of that spoilt dog.
This book is fun-packed, and I’d recommend it to anyone who’d enjoy a light read. I loved Poppy’s positive attitude and how she reacted to all these incredibly weird dates. She came across as a strong-headed woman, and I adored her engaging writing style. 5 out of 5 stars, for sure!
