It was serendipitous that I got to review Entrepreneurship: 5 Best Practices for Stay-at-Home Moms Who Want to Start an Online Business by Patricia Jennings, because I had already decided that 2024 will be the year I get my business up and running. I’m so grateful for this comprehensive step-by-step guide to all the key stages of this process.

The timing of this book’s appearance in my life is far from the only thing I appreciated about it. I realized while I have ideas about products and markets, I didn't really know where to start or what actions to take in what order. Thanks to this book I now know how to write a business plan, and so much more.

There are doubtless other available resources on how to develop a business, but this book stands out because it is geared towards mothers. The author reassured me that raising a family will have provided me with some transferable skills, and the book’s can-do tone left me thoroughly inspired.

The encouragement didn’t consist of empty motivational phrases. Above all, this book is practical, which I absolutely loved. For example, if fear of failure is holding you back from launching a venture, Jennings has got you covered. She shares a strategy that will help you to overcome that risk, even explaining how an initial failure can work to your advantage.

These are just some examples of Jennings’ unique and fresh approach. Acknowledging that there are multiple ways to do things, she considers different options and sets out pros and cons where applicable. She goes above and beyond standard, familiar advice. For example, when addressing the special needs of "mompreneurs", she sets aside tired buzzwords like “multitasking” and “work-life balance” in favour of approaches that were new to me. I’m excited to try those promising new strategies.

The information in this book felt so authentic that I am sure it is grounded in the real-life experiences of the author and other mompreneurs. She details the careers of some, but I would have liked to know more about Jennings’ personal experiences and how her career in the Navy helped. It’s hinted at between the lines, but I’d have welcomed a section dedicated to her story. Also do note that the resources she mentions are all US-based, though no doubt some are globalized while others will have regional equivalents.

These shortcomings were not severe, and I’d have been happy to give this book a perfect rating for its comprehensive yet concise content. However, it needs another round of editing, as I noticed more than ten errors throughout, such as missing or misplaced words. For that reason, I deducted one star resulting in a rating of four out of five. If you’re a mompreneur itching to get started, this book will equip you with all the tools you need and above all the encouragement to get your business off the ground. I highly recommend it!

Thank you for you detailed review. I like it when things serendipitously appear when we have need of them, and it sounds like this was very useful to you. I think it is great that it is tailored to mums, as often there are specific additional fears and worries to be addressed. Have you taken any steps in setting up your business yet?
