I’m always a bit skeptical about these stories from people who claim to have seen Heaven - like the “Heaven is for Real” kid, who later grew up to admit that he had basically made it all up. However, there are a couple of Biblical instances of people being allowed to see Heaven in this lifetime, such as John’s book of Revelation, so we know that it’s not impossible.
I can’t say for certain whether these children really did have dreams or visions, or if they were just describing their imaginations of what Heaven and Hell must be like. On one hand, some of their claims seemed so exactly like childish fables, with their talk of flying on pink and purple wings, and their descriptions of the ghosts and witches in hell. On the other hand, however, they did seem to have an awful lot of detail in their stories, nearly all of which could be supported by Scripture, (Jemima did a beautiful job of lining up the Scripture for comparison while keeping the kids’ words unaltered.) Even if these were nothing more than stories and daydreams, how wonderful that these kids’ stories and daydreams are about Jesus and Heaven.
I think the book was exceptionally well-written, and I liked Jemima’s factual, convincing manner. I love hearing these concepts that sometimes feel so abstract being discussed as the stark truths that they really are.
I did find myself wishing that the Gospel had been given more clearly. I realize that most people picking up this book are probably already Christian, at least to some degree, but if you took the time to clarify and explain other terms and concepts, I don’t understand why you would leave focus off of the most important concept.
Ultimately, the most important thing for every single person to understand is this:
Acknowledge that you are a sinner (you are not perfect) and that there is nothing you can do to save yourself (make your own way to Heaven.) The only way to be saved is to acknowledge that when Jesus died on the cross he paid for your sins (errors and shortcomings.) He made a way between your fallen, sin-cursed state and God’s glorious perfection. There is nothing you can do to save yourself. The only thing you have to do- the only thing you can do- is put your trust in Jesus, and you will be saved.
“And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved,”
Acts 16:31a KJV
