Many Rides, Many Stories by Rohit Srivastava is a short book that does not take very long to read. It is like scanning a copy of a gossip magazine or a similar publication that gives snippets of someone’s life but not enough to engage in. Although some stories cover serious life issues, they are skimmed over quickly before moving on to the next story.
The author shares his experiences as an Uber user. He hires the rider service regularly as a frequent traveler in his work as a consultant. While collecting stories for this book, Mr. Srivastava sat in the front passenger seat to converse with the drivers and learn their circumstances, especially why they are Uber drivers. In these conversations, he learned much about the driver’s situation, which caused them to take on the job of driving for strangers. Each story of the Uber driver is a compact biography that the author uses to find a moral lesson or example of human tenacity. The drivers shared private events that changed the direction of their lives, for good or bad. Many drivers had overcome challenges they took pride in conquering and were happy to discuss. It is surprising to learn that many drivers have well-paying careers. They drive for Uber for personal reasons, not necessarily for income.
The editing of this book is poor. The printer or the writer made innumerable errors, and the proofreading was inadequate. For instance, they misspelled the name of the wife of the author several times.
Two uses of profanity are incongruous. They are out of place in this book.
I give this book a 2 out of 4 and a 3 out of 5. For a better rating, the book needs improved editing and removal of the profanity. If someone is looking into driving for Uber, Mary Rides, Many Stories will give them an idea of what to expect.
