“Phobia Relief” by Kalliope Barlis is a concise, powerful book on eliminating phobias, fear, and stress in our daily lives. First, Kalliope Barlis discusses what fear and phobias are, and what the difference is between the two. Second, she lays out a practical, easy, step-by-step plan to remove those fears in a process that can be done in less than thirty minutes. The book contains exercises to guide you along the process of working through your phobias and even a helpful guide at the end of the book on what to do now that you are phobia-free.
“Phobia Relief” is unlike many self-help books that I have read before in that Kalliope did not spend half of the book convincing us of her technique, she let her results and the method speak for themselves. Her writing style, and delivery, were also refreshingly humble and succinct. There was no long-winded pitch or bragging, just the facts and how to relieve your phobias. Because of this, the book is shorter, but it’s a gold mine worth the read. Kalliope’s writing may be factual and to the point, but it is also funny and easy to read, there’s no complicated, technical jargon. The book is filled with stories and anecdotes of people she has worked with over the years, to illustrate the techniques, and show the results of this method. Despite being a non-fiction, self-help book, I found it enjoyable and easy to read. I was able to complete this book in an afternoon.
The editing was excellent, and I only found one noticeable error in the book. For this reason, and the excellent writing, I have given “Phobia Relief” a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. I deducted one star simply because of a spelling error that I discovered, and for no other reason. I think this is a remarkable, well-written, clever, and impactful book that everyone who has ever experienced fear should read.
