Fire Proof Happiness by Dr. Randy Ross is of a self-help genre. The author is a prolific writer and motivational speaker with more information at the back of the book. The book is based on different theories that contribute to one's happiness. Along with the theories presented, there are also examples of decisions that notorious people have made which have caused them to veer off a successful path, helping the reader to strategize in their pursuits of happiness.

One of the theories that is represented in Fire Proof Happiness is that of a theory by Charles Snyder based on hope. The author, Dr. Ross focuses on the need to have goals in one's life to obtain happiness and rebuff the negativity and challenges that people encounter. Hope versus hopelessness is thoroughly discussed so the reader understands that their thoughts and environment may be contributing to either having hope or not. The steps given are helpful to open flexible pathways toward goals. A sense of power is given to the reader by informing us we don't have control over other people, but we do have control over our thoughts and reactions. According to the author, agility and flexibility are good traits to possess which the author empathizes.

Fireproof Happiness made me explore myself and focus on what I enjoy doing. What do I want in life? What do I need to do to obtain what I want? As a reader, I can recognize the causes of depression and anxiety and attribute them to thoughts that manifest themselves from different factors. I think that this book is a lot different from some of the other self-help books that I have read because of this one theory of hope.

The outline in the back of the book was helpful for support. Along with the outline, there are additional resources throughout the book for the reader to utilize. The two appealing resources are the mini-course and the happiness statement worksheets, which are both free.

I did not encounter grammatical errors and the book flowed well. I would have appreciated more examples of women in power making decisions that affected their companies or their careers and who made an impact in their lives for the better or worse. As a woman, relating to other women would make me feel like I had more power in my life. However, I did think that Christy Brown and the founder of David Cook were good examples of men who did not incorporate a good strategy when expressing their agency and the reader can learn from their mistakes.

I also felt like Chapter One should have been on another topic other than COVID-19. Although we all went through that experience, I didn't want to think about it or relive it again. I think that another collective experience would have been better to write about.

Overall, I give this book four out of five stars. I thought it was informative and entertaining. The author explores strategies and challenges, giving the reader a different perspective on impediments to acquiring happiness. You can take away many skills from this book: positivity, reframing challenges, strategic planning, and community/ social support.
