Review of Because He Loved Us
[Following is a volunteer review of "Because He Loved Us" by Sharon Williams.]
The book titled Because He Loved Us narrates the story of a figure who embodied both human and divine qualities. This factual account commences with an elderly couple to whom God pledged the birth of a male child, destined to hold profound significance for the impending arrival of the Messiah. Jesus's life unfolds within these pages, predominantly chronicled in chronological order, as witnessed through the perspectives of his devoted disciples. Their experiences with Jesus led them to discover profound, unconditional love.
John the Baptist, a humble man, sustained himself solely on a diet of honey and locusts, abstaining from wine and haircuts. Committed to his role of baptizing and heralding the imminent arrival of the Messiah, John gained widespread renown, drawing crowds from all corners seeking his baptisms. Some even speculated that he might be the long-awaited Messiah, heralding freedom for the oppressed Jewish nation under Roman rule. However, his fate took a turn when he was apprehended by King Herod.
Jesus, my favourite character in this book, exemplifies unconditional love regardless of people's status. At a banquet hosted by Simon, a Pharisee, a notoriously sinful woman entered with an alabaster jar of expensive perfume. She wept at Jesus's feet, washing them with her tears, wiping them with her hair, and anointing them with the costly ointment, causing consternation among the attendees. Another captivating narrative involves Jesus at a wedding organized by his mother, Mary. When the wine ran out, Mary asked Jesus to help, but he hinted it wasn't yet his time. Nevertheless, he directed servants to fill large stone water jars and miraculously turned the water into superb wine, astonishing the banquet master. These events demonstrate Jesus's compassion and his adherence to God's ordained timeline for his ministry. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.
One reason I don't dislike anything about this book is that, despite the slightly small font size, it offers an engaging exploration of Jesus's life, from birth to crucifixion. Its portrayal of the impact of familiarity on appreciation, highlighted through the missed opportunities of the Nazareth residents, is particularly enlightening. The book's ability to convey such profound insights without giving rise to any dislike is truly commendable. I'd recommend this book to individuals interested in spiritual or religious narratives, especially those seeking a deeper understanding of Jesus's life and teachings. It could also appeal to readers fascinated by the impact of human behaviour and the complexities of familiarity in recognizing significant truths.
I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars due to its thorough examination of Jesus's life, covering everything from his birth to his crucifixion. What truly stands out is its profound portrayal of how familiarity can blind us to valuable truths, exemplified by the missed opportunities in Nazareth. Despite the minor issue of a slightly small font size, the book's ability to deliver such insightful and impactful lessons elevates its significance. Its depth, spiritual themes, and powerful narrative contribute to a compelling read that merits the highest rating.
