Surviving the Business of Healthcare is part memoir and part manual about the healthcare system in the United States of America. It was written by Barbara Galutia Regis. Barbara’s family has been in the healthcare industry for three generations. Her father was a family physician in a small town in the eighties. He inspired Barbara to go into the medical industry and become a physician’s assistant.

While writing the book, Barbara was diagnosed with a rare type of skin cancer. She got treatment for it and survived. This gave her a unique perspective of being on both the giving and receiving end of healthcare. This book has a unique format. Half of the chapter discusses aspects of the healthcare industry, while the rest of the chapter will be an anecdote about her childhood in the small town she grew up in.

Through this book, I have learned what a Primary Care Provider is and how important it is to consult a PCP before going to a specialist and spending more money than needed. This book also encourages patients and their relatives or friends to advocate for themselves and their loved ones and not be forced into treatments that make them uncomfortable. The in-depth review of various health insurance schemes will also help readers make an informed decision regarding their own health insurance.

I also liked the section in which the author explains the advantages of buying medicine on the Internet and in small pharmacies as there could be a lot of cost discrepancies between big pharma and small ones.

There is nothing I disliked about this book. There is no violence or profanity. There are no erotic scenes. I couldn’t find any errors so I think that this book is professionally edited. The author is based in the USA and most of the advice like health insurance and the legal side of the healthcare industry will be only useful in that country. But there are a lot of other topics that can be universally applicable.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars because I have learned a lot of things about the healthcare industry through this book and it is also well edited and interesting. I recommend this book to readers who like to learn about the healthcare industry and how different kinds of health insurance work. I also recommend this book to readers who enjoy memoirs.
