Review of Phobia Relief
Phobia Relief, written by Kalliope Barlis, is a self-help book that aims to tackle phobias using simple techniques. The author explores different neuro-linguistic programming methods designed to retrain the brain and reduce the power of fears.
I appreciated the simplicity and readability of her writing style, which allowed me to finish the book in one sitting. However, there are no other positive aspects, and I was highly disappointed in this book.
Although it was simple and easy to read, it was also incredibly vague. The book claims to be a comprehensive guide but fails to deliver anything of depth or substance in its content. Barlis merely skims the surface of vitally important psychological concepts without considering the underlying cause of phobias. The techniques and advice provided are oversimplified and fail to acknowledge the nuanced nature of phobias and the unique triggers of each individual. The result offers some quick-fix advice rather than addressing the root of the problem.
Phobia relief suffers from a lack of organization and structure. The chapters feel disjointed, jumping from one topic to another without a clear transition or logical progression. Most of the book was composed of disconnected personal anecdotes rather than any substantial or helpful information. The resulting structure of the book reads more like a series of blog posts rather than a well-crafted guide. The author fails to provide any scientific basis or evidence to support the methods and techniques provided throughout the book. While personal stories can be inspiring, they do not substitute for necessary research when discussing and approaching phobias.
It is also worth noting that the book uses language that can be perceived as dismissive and disrespectful towards those struggling with phobias. There are multiple instances where Barlis describes the behaviour of people with phobias and fears as “stupid”. While it is helpful to challenge negative behaviours, the author’s choice of words comes across as belittling and risks alienating the reader.
I rate this book 2 out of 5 stars. There was very little I liked about the content of this book. However, I gave it 2 stars as, overall, it was well-written. The writing style was easy to read, and it was well-edited.
I would not recommend this book to anyone seeking help for overcoming phobias. Phobia relief lacks credibility and fails to provide the reader with any practical and effective tools to address their phobias. I would suggest seeking out alternative resources that are evidence-based.
