From Drift to Shift by Jody B. Miller was an inspirational read. The book begins by asking questions for the readers to answer to know if they need to make a shift in their lives. The book moves on to other peoples' shifts through stories that reflect their changes. From Drift to Shift is a book that shares the challenges of individuals from different cultures and circumstances that are challenging to overcome. Hence, they made a shift in their lives to acclimate to a new situation. However, these individuals do overcome their obstacles and make a shift toward self-actualization, using support from their community and culture to persevere in their lives. Some of these obstacles the narrator shares are very huge, such as loss of motor skills and losing one's land. The chapters close with helpful mantras that support the reader by strengthening the reader's own beliefs in oneself. These mantras offer closure to the chapter in a positive and uplifting way.

I would rate this book five out of five stars. I give this book a five-star rating because the author, Jody B. Miller, studied her subjects well. She knows the people. The reader knows exactly what the people went through and how they felt through the shifting process. As the reader, I can therefore identify with the authors' subjects. The author further explores how the people turned things around in their lives and used that challenge to their advantage and improve their lives and the lives of others. This book made me feel like I can accomplish my goals.

Jody B. Miller describes the culture of the people in her stories, incorporating diversity, different religions, and practices. The reader will learn about other cultures and religious practices. The author is very socio-centric in her writing style. All the people in the book have contributed to others through their suffering, which is an interesting concept.

The stories in this book caught my attention. They were extreme stories of hardships. I would have also enjoyed reading a story where the challenges weren't so intense to identify with, as a reader. However, I would thoroughly recommend this book. I believe that this book will inspire the reader to make a shift in their lives for the better.
