If you battle and struggle with your phobias daily, then I would recommend reading “Phobia Relief: From Fear to Freedom” by Kalliope Barlis. Did you know all of us are naturally born with fears of falling and loud noises? All other fears are learned or experienced through a traumatizing experience. Barlis helps overcome these irrational fears in simple exercises that will alleviate your phobias and help live your life to the fullest.
What I really liked about this book were the exercises that were offered. As you read through sections of the book, Barlis provides exercises to help train your brain to think different about your phobias. She offers mind exercises, for example, taking something that seems massive to you and forcing yourself to shrink down the fear in your head to the size of a quarter. Take that quarter sized fear and just throw it away.
Another point I would like to make is how the paragraphs are broken up. I am usually not one for self-help books because I feel they drag on. I feel myself putting the book down to walk away because I am bombarded with so much information. With Barlis’ book, paragraphs are sectioned off in a way that you are not overwhelmed with the advice you are given. The paragraphs have breaks in between them, so you are able to contemplate what you read.
Barlis’ also gives a transcript of how she helped one of her clients with their fears. This shows anyone with the right mindset can overcome their phobias if given the right exercises and advice. I wish she placed more transcripts or snippets of her assisting clients with their fears.
I would happily give this book four stars. If you feel like you are alone in your struggling phobia, this book shows that you are not, and you are able to overcome it!
