If God is all-powerful and all-loving, why do evil and suffering still exist in the world?
That is the foundational question behind Sine Nomine’s book, WHY GOD ALLOWS EVIL AND SUFFERING. Nomine makes the argument for the existence of God citing dozens of authors, scientists, psychologists, and Biblical scholars to provide foundational information to support this argument. With many references to the Bible as well as The Catechism of the Catholic Church, Nomine examines “the problem of pain”, the idea that the existence of pain and evil in the world make it difficult or impossible to believe in a loving God.
This book is incredibly thought-provoking and well-written. It is not a casual read, by any means. The information and arguments made in the book require the reader’s full attention in order to understand and make sense of the subject matter. Each argument made by the author is clearly thoroughly researched, and that research is presented for the reader’s consideration throughout the process.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the subject matter who also has the time and focus to devote to its study. As I stated, I wouldn’t consider this a “relaxing” or “easy read” book. I noticed several times as I was reading, if my attention was divided, I would have to go back and re-read portions to have a full grasp of what was being discussed.
Having said that, the layout of the book is very well thought out, with each argument established and supported as a foundation for subsequent arguments. Each chapter built on the points that had been laid out earlier in the book, and each portion was necessary for the full understanding of the overall argument the author was making.
The book was also beautifully edited which made it much easier to follow the ideas being presented, despite their often complicated nature. Overall, I wouldn’t say that I specifically “enjoyed” reading this book because of the focus and attention it required, but I did feel that the author’s objective was met in that it did cause me to examine my own beliefs and the reasons behind them.
