Review of Snatched Up to Heaven!
Snatched Up to Heaven! by Jemima Paul and Arvind Paul delves into the extraordinary experiences of two young children, Priyanka and Deepika, aged four and two, respectively, who have been transported to heaven and hell in their dreams. Jemima Paul, the narrator of this non-fictional narrative is the mother of the children. She connects the experiences the children had in their dreams or, as she calls them, ‘visions’ with the relevant Bible verses and decodes them for the readers.
I would give this book a rating of three stars out of five. For me, it was overall a pleasant and relaxing read. Let’s first discuss the positives. What I liked most about this book is the language. The simplicity and fluidity of the language make the narrative more engaging and beautifully complement the overarching theme of the book. Also, the briefness of the book allows it to be finished within a couple of hours. The descriptions of the children’s visions drew my attention as well. Though the author described those in a third-person narrative, how she conveyed the childlike simplicity in the children’s narrative is truly discernable. Another aspect that I liked is how she skillfully interprets the aforementioned visions, incorporating her theological insights and aligning them with Bible verses. The way she organizes the whole narrative of the visions by thoughtfully dividing it into several chapters allows her to focus on different aspects of the visions and elaborate them in the Biblical context for the readers.
Now, what I did not like so much about the book is that it felt somewhat monotonous at times. However, that is perhaps somewhat justified as it mainly deals with the descriptions of heaven and hell: something we already are at least a little familiar with. Besides, the influence of parental guidance on the children's descriptions of heaven and hell cannot be entirely dismissed. Therefore, there can definitely be some skepticism among the readers regarding the dreams. Some minor grammatical errors were noticed, too. These are the main reasons why I did not give it a full five out of five stars.
Now this brings to the next question. Who is this book for? This goes without saying, the book is deeply rooted in Christianity. The content of the book is wholly based on the Christian belief system. So, for a logical thinker or for someone whose beliefs are completely different from those of Christianity, this book might not make much sense. On the other hand, for a curious and spiritually inclined reader, it offers a unique perspective on the matters of the divine. For devout believers in Christianity, this work provides an illuminating perspective on their, as the author says, ‘childlike faith.’
In short, if you are spiritually inclined, and looking for an intriguing narrative that reminds you of the teachings of Christianity from a slightly different perspective, Snatched Up to Heaven! should be a good choice. For any such reader, this book will surely leave an indelible mark on the reader's thoughts about the afterlife.
