Review of From Drift to SHIFT
Is it possible to experience a life full of meaning, purpose, and passion? Can you really be your true self and find both success and happiness? In her book From Drift to SHIFT, Jody B. Miller documents the stories of several diverse individuals who walked through various challenges and emerged on the other side finding joy, peace, passion, and purpose. Their struggles included serious illnesses, tough childhood situations, stress, life-threatening and life-changing accidents, and depression. The author also describes some of her own life experiences. In this well-written non-fiction work, a combination of narrative and dialogue is used to illustrate how changes, sometimes perceived as obstacles, are needed to advance along the path of becoming who we are meant to be. She also reminds us to look for "signs" along the way. Change, whether sought out or unsolicited, could be the answer for both your personal life and your life's work.
The author uses a friendly and engaging tone to convey her message. The personal stories, sometimes intense and full of emotion, are interesting and held my attention. Some dialogue is woven throughout each individual's story, making the writing more authentic, appealing, and relatable. Each chapter ends with a list of takeaways, which is convenient for reflection and future reference. Miller has also sprinkled many thought-provoking quotes throughout her book. One of my favorites seems to sum up how we should seek to live: "When we give unconditionally from a place of passion and joy, it is amazing how much good comes our way." While, in my opinion, this book is neither earth-shattering nor revelatory, it is a wonderful reminder of the simple innate truths that should be our guides through life.
There are a few things I dislike about From Drift to SHIFT. First is the unusual and variable format; the layout of the text is a bit distracting. On top of that, I expected the pages to be full of exciting new advice and secret methods to success and happiness. That is not the case. Rather, the book is primarily a collection of stories illustrating the "shifts" that led to betterment in the lives of the featured individuals.
While the writing itself has a professional quality, the editing is a disappointment. While reading, I encountered a handful of various types of errors. Because I expected more of a "how-to" book and because I found the editing to be lacking, I rate From Drift to SHIFT 4 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to anyone who is experiencing dissatisfaction in their career or facing difficulty in their personal life. Anyone needing inspiration and encouragement to implement positive changes in their life, take a leap of faith, follow their heart, or adapt to difficult situations may find this book helpful. Individuals who are simply wondering if they are on the right path for themselves may equally find value in reading From Drift to SHIFT.
