Wanting to start my first business, I have read my fair share of books about start-ups, and have listened to a multitude of business podcasts. This book, "The Successful Business Startup Action Guide" by Husam S. Alsaleh is different. Instead of making it unnecessarily complex, entrepreneur Husam takes a pragmatic approach, offering readers an extensive framework on how to get started on their next successful business venture. It is not groundbreaking in its research, but gives a no-nonsense philosophy on how and when to get started with your business. It takes well-known theories of business strategy, like Michael Porters' theories, and breaks them down into practical pieces that will help you understand the playing field of your project better. As a business student, you may have already studied all the theories, but as a starting entrepreneur, one might not have the knowledge and experience of having started their own projects. That is what makes this book stand out. Husam reflects back on his own successful and failed endeavors, and although it takes place mostly within one particular sector in Saudi Arabia, his learnings, combined with the framework presented, can be transferred globally and timelessly to any new project in the world.

This book centers its strategic framework around 8 questions, to help you optimally prepare to get your own successful startup. It helps with identifying business opportunities, doing market research, developing strategies, and gaining and sustaining a competitive edge. It also focuses on the cross-over from entrepreneur to leader, which inevitably may need to happen once your business grows larger. Husam writes in a pleasant way, taking away doubts that you may have before starting your own journey. He encourages the reader to embark on the journey, learn on the job and reflect on where further growth is needed. The writing style is as if he is standing next to you, coaching you on the job. He shares his personal journey with the goal to prevent the readers from making the same mistakes.
For me personally this book has been an essential read and it was the final push I needed to get started on actualizing my concept into a real project.

The book earns a 4 out of 5 rating because it kept me inspired from beginning to end. However, the prose often felt conversational, as if it were being spoken rather than formally written. Additionally, Husam introduces something he calls the "me-too" theory, a term that, in this day and age, might be easily misconstrued. Other than that, starting the chapters with strong quotes and then explaining them was an excellent way to keep me interested and motivated to read on.
