Kalliope Barlis’s Phobia Relief aims to assist people with overcoming their fears and anxiety. She takes the skills and techniques of Dr. Richard Bandler and compiles them into a quick and easy read to show readers how to shrink irrational fears and change their lives for the better. Kalliope gives the reader a step-by-step how to alter how the brain sees and perceives fears and ultimately eliminate fear altogether. Her techniques are easy to use and comprehend, and her explanations are written so everyone can understand them. This book is broken into three parts- part one focuses on how to shrink fears, part two focuses on changing fear to freedom, and part three focuses on a client session. Each section flows nicely to the next and is never confusing or hard to follow. Kalliope is an expert in phobia relief and NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), and she uses her expertise to help people of all ages get a handle on irrational fears through reading Phobia Relief. For most people, this book lets them avoid seeing a therapist and be able to handle things on their own.

I would rate this book a three out of five stars. While Kalliope provided some great tips and scientific explanations for how and why the brain operates the way it does, it seemed very repetitive. Altering how the brain thinks about fears was emphasized multiple times. The same concepts are discussed over and over. I like how she included real-life examples from clients she has interacted with and exercises for the readers to do themselves. Part three walks the reader through an entire client session and shows how the steps discussed in parts one and two work and provide relief for people, which is great. It is obvious Kalliope knows what she is talking about and has lots of experience in helping people overcome fears, so trust is established early on in the book.
